Protect me from abuse

Children in Tanzania are facing the harms and realities of online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA). Evidence shows that 4% of internet-users aged 12-17 in Tanzania are victims of grave instances of online sexual exploitation and abuse. Other sexual exploitation and abuse cases are done in families, public institutions and in recreational centers. Planet Child Tanzania ensures to work with the Government of Tanzania to put new legislation, systems and procedures into effect; to educate children, adults and public officials so that they can play their roles in combating all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse using the existing guidelines, children’s policies and the law of the child, 2009.

Our discussions focus on the following:

  • To suggest a review and amendment of the Cybercrimes Act to criminalize conduct related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) more comprehensively.
  • Encourage compliance to the Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection adopted by the African Union in 2014.
  • Promote partnership with police Gender and Children Desks scrutinizing video centers’ programs where we work.
  • The roles of Planet Child to safeguarding children victims of trafficking, sexual exploitation and abuse using the national guidelines for the establishment and management of safe houses for victims of trafficking in persons and survivors of violence in Tanzania
  • How to work with police, Gender and Children’s desk to establish operating procedures so that the provisions of the Law of the Child Act on child-friendly justice are implemented consistently.
  • The necessity of providing social support services for all children victims of all forms of abuse.
  • Planet Child applies situational crime prevention model and therapeutic engagement model Prevention programs strategies involve working directly with the parent (such as parent education programs), while other programs target children (such as school-based personal safety programs). In contrast, home visiting programs target the family unit, but usually differ as to whether the program goals relate to outcomes specifically for the child, the parent, or the family.
